How to Extend WiFi to a Shed – Long Range Internet Without Running Cable

If your house has good internet but your WiFi won't reach the shed, you're not alone. Standard home WiFi routers are designed to cover a house, not travel across large yards, paddocks or between separate buildings.

For sheds located some distance from the house, a normal plug-in WiFi extender may simply be too far away to receive a reliable signal.

A better solution can be a long range point-to-point WiFi link.

How Do I Get WiFi From My House to My Shed?

A point-to-point WiFi system works differently from a normal WiFi extender.

Instead of trying to spread your existing WiFi signal further and further, two outdoor antennas create a dedicated wireless connection between the buildings.

One antenna is installed at your house and connected to your existing internet router.

The second antenna is mounted at the shed and pointed back towards the house.

The two units then form a wireless link between the buildings.

How Far Can WiFi Be Extended to a Shed?

With suitable line of sight between the antennas, the SatPlus system can operate over distances of up to 5 km.

Do I Need to Dig a Trench for Ethernet Cable?

No.

Running underground Ethernet cable to a shed can require trenching across a driveway, lawn or paddock.

A wireless bridge sends the network connection through the air instead.

You still use short Ethernet cable runs between each antenna and the equipment inside each building, but you don't need to run a network cable all the way between the house and shed.

Can I Have Normal WiFi Inside the Shed?

Yes.

At the shed end you can connect the receiving antenna to a wireless router or access point.

This creates WiFi inside and around the shed for devices such as:

  • Phones

  • Tablets

  • Computers

  • Smart TVs

  • Security cameras

  • WiFi switches

  • Machinery monitoring equipment

  • Smart home devices

If you only need to connect an Ethernet security camera, the camera may be able to connect directly to the receiving unit without requiring another WiFi router.
