One of the best ways to cool a home or business down in summer is solar roof ventilation like the SolarKing solar fan. Roof space temperatures in Australia can hit 50 to 70°C in summer, and the most effective way to bring that down is to install a SolarKing roof fan.

Most homes already have wind-driven "whirly birds" on the roof. The problem is they rely on strong wind to do anything at all, and even then they only shift around 100 CBM of air per hour. The SolarKing moves 2,100 CBM per hour — there's no real comparison.

The SolarKing runs on solar power and only kicks in once your roof space hits 25°C, so it's not pulling out warm air in winter when you actually want that heat kept in (whirly birds run regardless of temperature, hot or cold). Once the sun goes down, the SolarKing stops ventilating — but by then it's already done its job, and the roof cools naturally from that lower starting point.

Ever noticed how the ground floor of a two-storey house is always cooler than the upstairs? That's because the upper level takes the brunt of the heat before it reaches the floor below. The SolarKing works the same way — it replaces the hot air trapped in your roof with cooler outside air, so a lot less of that extreme heat ever makes it down into your living space.

If you're after a real difference in comfort this summer — and want to cut down on power-hungry air conditioning — let the sun do the work for free, and run your air con a lot less.

The V4 model builds on everything the V3 offers, plus one big upgrade: DC power connection.

Plug in the included 240V power pack and you can keep the fan running after the sun goes down. It's fully automatic — the unit switches over to the power pack once solar drops off, then switches back to solar as soon as light levels pick up again. No manual switching required. The fan still shuts off automatically once the temperature drops below 25 degrees.

Like the V3, the V4 also runs at a stable speed rather than surging and dropping every time a cloud passes overhead. You still get full speed in direct sun — it just won't hunt up and down as conditions change. And it keeps the same quiet operation the V3 introduced, so it's not something you'll notice running.

HOW MANY DO I NEED FOR MY HOME?

Estimate Roof Space Volume

The number of fans required depends on the volume of air in the roof space that needs to be ventilated. 25°C.

Australian summers keep getting hotter, and so do our homes.

The new V4 wireless remote lets you turn the fan on and off, adjust the speed, set timers, or force the unit on even when the roof space is below 25°C.

Australian summers keep getting hotter, and so do our homes.

Estimate Roof Space Volume

The number of fans required depends on the volume of air in the roof space that needs to be ventilated. Roof space volume is calculated as:

 • Volume = Floor Area × Roof Height Most Australian homes have a pitched roof with an average height of about 1.2 to 1.5 meters at the peak, tapering to the eaves. For simplicity, average effective height of 1.5 meters for the roof cavity.
 • 200 m² home: Volume = 200 m² × 1.5 m = 300 cubic meters (m³)
 • 300 m² home: Volume = 300 m² × 1.5 m = 450 cubic meters (m³)

Determine Ventilation Needs

Ventilation standards often recommend exchanging the air in a roof space 10-20 times per hour to effectively reduce heat and moisture buildup. For a conservative estimate, use 10 air changes per hour (ACH), which is suitable for general roof ventilation in hot climates like Australia.

 • 200 m² home: Required airflow = 300 m³ × 10 ACH = 3000 m³/h
 • 300 m² home: Required airflow = 450 m³ × 10 ACH = 4500 m³/h

Calculate Number of Fans

Each Solarking fan extracts 2100 m³/h. Dividing the required airflow by the fan’s capacity gives us the number of fans needed:

 • 200 m² home: 3000 m³/h ÷ 2100 m³/h ≈ 1.43 fans (round up to 2 fans)
 • 300 m² home: 4500 m³/h ÷ 2100 m³/h ≈ 2.14 fans (round up to 3 fans)

Rounding up ensures adequate ventilation.

Temperatures in Australia continue to get hotter and electricity costs continue to increase. On average, your air conditioner accounts for 40% of your total power bill during the summer months and with temperatures outside of 35 - 45 degrees, it really needs to be on for most of the day. Insulation in the walls and roof cavity will certainly help to reduce the the core temperature inside but one of the major issues is the build up of heat within the roof space and how this heat radiates through the ceiling.

A roof space in Australia can reach temperatures of between 60 and 70 degrees in the summer ! Sure, you could install a whirly bird style extraction fan and it will certainly help but these mechanical fans only operate in a breeze and their efficiency is rather poor when compared to our Solar Wall Extraction Fans and Solar Roof Extraction Fans. A whirly bird will extract on average 100 Cubic metres (CBM) or air per hour while our solar roof and wall fans will extract a massive 2100 CBM per hour. That's more than 20 times more efficient ! Furthermore, our solar extraction fans will only operate when the sun is out.

Our solar exhaust fan works by extracting the hot air from inside the roof space and pulling cooler in from the gaps in the roof, under the eaves, through the shower vents and any other vents or openings. You'll not only cool down the air inside the roof, you'll also remove moisture in the roof caused by the steam from your showers and therefore reduce the chance of timber rot in the roof space.

Typical applications for our solar ventilation fan are: Commercial buildings, offices, factories, barns, sheds, animal shelters, stables, holiday homes, residential homes, aged care facilities etc. There are so many benefits from installing our solar roof ventilation fans.

REDUCED USE OF YOUR AIR CONDITIONER
Most of set our air conditioner to around 23 degrees. In summer, for most of the day, the air conditioner will be working all day, battling to maintain this temperature. Your Solar ventilation fan will work with your air conditioner and remove all of that hot air from inside the roof space and therefore reduce the radiated heat coming from the ceiling. This will result in a cooler home and your air conditioner usage will reduce.

BETTER THAN A WHIRLYBIRD
A whirlybird will help to exhaust some of the hot air from your roof but due to the fairly low volume, during summer the air is rapidly heated up again. Our Solar ventilation exhaust fan can exhaust 20 times that amount of air and at zero cost as the motor is powered by the attached solar panel.

ROOF SPACE HEAT REDUCTION
During summer, a tin or tiled roof space can reach temperatures up to 65 degrees. Our Solar extraction fan can reduce this temperature by up to 30 degrees making your home much more comfortable to be in.

SOLAR POWERED
There are no running costs associated with our solar roof fans. The solar panel converts the solar energy to electrical energy and power the motor which drives the fan.

BRUSHLESS DC MOTOR

All of our fans are fitted with a high quality, brushless, DC motor with double shielded ball bearings that will provide years of quiet, trouble free operation and require no maintenance

Solar Roof Fan SolarKingV4

2026-04-08
Our old Solartube fan system was old and was not working well. We selected the Solarking V4 C/W remote and AC backup as a replacement and called SatPlus and left a message and the call was returned. All my questions were well answered; I decided to purchase it, then it arrived and I had it mounted on the roof all within less than a week. The installation went straight forward with no difficulties.
Air flow was about 3m/s with 240Vac (full speed) and 3.4 - 3.6m/s (solar only, supply unplugged) and 4.1m/s outside discharge. Speed does increase when on solar only. I can hear the fan humming on solar only but not as much as the refrigerator, dishwasher or oven.
Functionality; Fan On/Off, 4 x fan speeds work on 240ac and solar (can reduce noise with speed), Remote pairing button, 1,2,4,8hr time delay buttons, and a 25C over-ride.
There is no command feedback to the remote, but I don’t think it is needed as I can hear a light hum change in the ceiling. The 240Vac backup system works day during cloud passing, and also night time delay off.
Because I live in Cairns, the fan regularly starts in the morning and I can let it run another 4, 8hrs after sunset or overnight on the tropical nights.
Overall, my experience was exceptional, every question asked was answered thoughtfully and respectfully, ordered, delivered, working in under a week is right up there with the best. To get both service and performance in the one package is commendable. Not overstated or underdelivered.

I would have to say that this has been one of the best purchases I’ve ever made hands down.
Not having Aircondioning due to a house fire and the time of year, trying to get any trades in is next to impossible.
I was going to buy a couple of whirlybirds, but the cost of them is ridiculous compared to the cost of this little gem.
The temperature today is 41 degrees Celsius, without having installed this last night the inside of the house, although it is extremely well insulated, would have warmed up like an oven and held the heat over night, having yet another hot sleepless night, although we are going to need to purchase another two for the house due to the size and the way the roof is pitched, I’m also going to be purchasing another three for the shed, I’m blown away by the performance of this little Rippa and would highly recommended this product, as I already have to everyone I’ve been in contact with already.
I can’t thank these guys enough, I purchased it on Sunday afternoon and it arrived Tuesday morning, that alone blows my mind, I can’t get something out of Melbourne over night, but I can’t get this from Queensland, delivered to my door at Baranduda (a little suburb just out of Wodonga) pretty much overnight.
It has been an absolute pleasure being able to purchase and install this product, I just can’t believe that it was installed within 48hours of making the purchase.
Well done to you guys, this is exactly how you operate a business, it’s great to see and you are setting the standard for every industry in my opinion.
I will be definitely interested to hear what my wife thinks when she gets home from work, I have no doubt she will be dreading it as she normally is due to how hot it can get, but she is in for a huge surprise that’s for sure.
Many thanks again, this has been a game changer!

INCLUDES WIRELESS REMOTE CONTROL, DC POWER CONNECTION AND FREE FREIGHT

The new V4 wireless remote lets you turn the fan on and off, adjust the speed, set timers, or force the unit on even when the roof space is below 25°C.

Australian summers keep getting hotter, and so do our homes.

MORE INFO
